After a full week of practice at home, the Rampage look to bounce back from a disappointing opening night in Cedar Park which saw them lose a 3-1 lead in the 3rd period, eventually losing to the Stars, 5-4 on Devin Shore’s breakaway goal in overtime. San Antonio, historically, has played the Griffins tough and this year’s team should be very familiar with Grand Rapids, a division rival of the Lake Erie Monsters. Last year, while with the Monsters, Andrew Agozzino notched seven points against the Griffins, with Colin Smith chipping in six points of his own.
Grand Rapids is coming off a winless weekend in California, falling to Bakersfield 1-0 on opening night, then losing a foggy battle with San Diego 4-2 on Saturday. The Griffins are a skilled team that won’t struggle offensively very for very long and return to Van Andel Arena for their home opener tonight. Detroit Red Wings prospects Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou, along with AHL veteran Andy Miele and former Rampage captain Jeff Hoggan lead the way offensively. On defense, the Griffins are young and talented with Xavier Oullet and Ryan Sproul leading the way.
Notes:
- Patrick Bordeleau did not make the trip to Grand Rapids. It is unknown at this time if his injury is related to his injury issues from last season.
- Sean Shapiro wrote an excellent piece on Rampage goalie Calvin Pickard.
- Ben Street, despite playing in just one game, finds himself on the front page of the AHL scoring leaders (T-9th) thanks to his 1g-2a night in CPC. Ty Rattie of the Chicago Wolves is the only other player on the front page with a single game played.
- Keep an eye on Borna Rendulic in Colorado and Dennis Everberg in San Antonio. Based on playing time and performance, we could be seeing a swap in the not-too-distant future.
The Rampage will stick around in West Michigan for another game Saturday night before heading home to prepare for the home opener in the newly remodeled ATT Center on Oct 24th against the Stockton Heat.
