The Rampage head west to wrap up the 2016 version of the Rodeo Road Trip for the first of four games in California. First up, the Bakersfield Condors. The Condors have lost two straight at home after winning a season high five straight to catapult themselves back into playoff contention, trailing 4th place San Jose by .020 percentage points for the final spot in the division.
The Rampage, meanwhile, rebounded from an embarrassing weekend against San Jose and Stockton, where they were outscored 10-1 in crucial division games, to take three out of four points from Lake Erie in Cleveland. After blowing a 3-1 lead Friday, eventually losing in overtime, the Rampage scored twice in the final minute on Saturday to force OT. Maxim Noreau scored with 23 seconds remaining to tie the game and would score the game winning goal in the 7th round of a shootout which saw Reto Berra, with the Rampage on a conditioning stint, stop 6 of 7 Monsters attempts.
With all four upcoming games against division opponents, if the Rampage are going to make a late run at the playoffs, it needs to start this weekend. The big wild card, however, is the NHL trade deadline on Feb 29th. The Avs already made one move which majorly impacts the Rampage, sending Colin Smith (13g-21a) and a 4th round draft pick to Toronto for NHL forward Shawn Matthias. With a handful of players on expiring deals, the parent club could be busy this week and Monday.
Notes:
- Berra will likely be with the team for these last four games of the road trip before heading back to Denver next week. Again, the trade deadline is the big wild card here as they could look to move the veteran goalie and hand the backup reigns to Calvin Pickard full time.
- No moves have been made as of now after the Matthias deal, but someone has to come off the active roster before he can join the team. All signs point to Andreas Martinsen being sent to San Antonio, but stay tuned…
- After returning home next week, the Rampage will play 13 of their final 18 games at home (might not be a good thing), leaving the state of Texas just twice in the final six weeks of the season.
