Rampage, Husso, Shut Down Stars…Again

AHL Texas Stars vs. San Antonio Rampage

Darren Abate/AHL

The San Antonio Rampage play the Texas Stars 14 times this season. Halfway through the season series, the Rampage are a baffling 6-1 against their rivals from the north following Friday’s 1-0 OT win at the AT&T Center.

Dominic Toninato scored the lone goal 1:12 into the OT period, beating Stars goalie Mike Mckenna through the legs to secure the extra point for the home team. Rocco Grimaldi and Chris Butler picked up assists on the goal.

Rampage goaltender Ville Husso stopped all 27 shots he faced for his 3rd career shutout and first in a Rampage uniform. Husso, who faced only 13 shots through the first 40 minutes, stopped all 14 shots in the third period earning the Rampage the OT point before turning it over to the offense.

Note: Grimaldi moved to 5th place on the franchise all-time scoring list, passing current Star Greg Rallo with his 116th point in a Rampage uniform. Rocco now sits just 5 points behind David Spina for fourth place.

The Good

  • Ville Husso was outstanding in the third period when Texas came out flying and throwing everything they could at him. He never looked uncomfortable and his confidence rubbed off onto his teammates.
  • The Rampage were able to stay out of the penalty box limiting the dangerous Stars PP to just two chances.

The Bad

  • Four out of the five Pacific Division teams with a game last night, other than San Antonio, picked up at least one point, including Tucson which rallied from a two goal deficit late in the third to win, keeping the Rampage in 4th place.

The Ugly

  • The power play fell back into its old habits, having difficulty gaining the zone or getting any kind of offense set up.
